Last thing that I heard about Jerome is knowing that he lived in Dallas, Tex.    He has gone to be with the Lord now and is at peace.   He was a good and friendly class mate while we were in elementary school, McKinley.   I don't remember seeing him again even though he went to the same high school together.   Rest In peace, Jerome.  01/24/14.

There's a long backstory which I won't bore you with the details of, but it led me to wondering whatever happened to my good friend jerome. He was pretty much the only friend I had in the fourth grade at McKinley elementary. Reality sunk in when one day I invited him to come home with me and to play football in my backyard. Remembering how things were back then, I was probably 10 maybe. One or more of my neighbors couldn't wait till my mother got home from work to tell them that little Gerald had had a color boy in the backyard playing ball. That was my first Awakening to the issue of race relations. That pretty much ended our friendship. At least as I knew it. We continued to be cordial with one another all the way through high School. I remember his heroics playing for the golden tornado. But sorry I didn't stay in touch with him. He was a good good man.

I too remember his great smile.  Always the same honest smile.  Jerome passed many years ago and we all know the terrible path for MS patients.  As I sit here this morning the hymn "Onward Christian Soldiers" comes to mind.  It fits Jerome for sure and I believe it fits me and most of you.

Jerome and I sat beside each other in Miss Smith's English class. He was always friendly in a shy, quiet way and very respectful to Miss Smith, a force to be reckoned with and a little scary, whom many of our parents also had as a teacher. Jerome wasn't afraid of her. He was just well-raised. Rest in Peace, Jerome.

Jerome and I became good buddies through football. Even after I was hurt and couldn't play anymore our friendship remained through High School. I was especially good when I learned he also was becoming a Minister. We shared comments about the ministry but I am sorry to say we lost track of each other. His big smile and warm handshake was a real blessing to me. So h;appy to read all the comments of others

Jerome and I became fast friends when he came to Whittier school, missing the first day of school  because his parents just moved to Coffeyville.  Other wise, perfect attendance.  I did further info. gathering and made the handwritten comments on the newspaper obituary.  He had a quick smile and laugh that would entice you to laugh.  He left us too quickly!  R I P, Jerome.  Again, this memory page is great and serving another purpose.

My best memory of Jerome was in our 10th year class reunion picnic at big hill. Susan and I have our young son David with us and he held his arms out for Jerome to hold him. That was kind of unusual and he didn't normally do that. Jerome started walking around the picnic holding our son and people would ask who's child is that if he would tell them it was his and just keep walking. He had a great sense of humor. It was a great guy.
